Spring Shearing Day and Fiber Event
June 18, 2011 ~ 10 am – 2 pm

Shearing from the stand.

Shearing from the stand.

On June 18, 2011, we will be hosting our fourth annual shearing and fleece demonstration.. We are again inviting anyone interested to join us, including the spinners from Ewe-nique Knits in Royal Oak. Last year they watched as we sheared four ewes on the stand, learned to spin fresh fleece in the grease, and sampled many of our fleeces and rovings. We will again be joined by Lia Young, Spinning instructor from Pleasant Ridge, MI. Our “brother farm” in Davison, MI, Ugly Dogs Farm, will also be present to answer questions, demonstrate spinning, and generally provide a helping hand.

We’ll begin around 10 am with shearing two to three sheep and giving some fleece evaluation tips . We’ll break for lunch and then shear a more couple ewes afterwards, as interest demands. All the fleeces will be for sale, along with our rovings, which include Romney, Bluefaced Leicester, llama, and mohair blends. See our roving page for an idea of what we’ll have available. We typically sell at a discount for this event.

Coffee will be provided. There will also be some lamb stew available at lunchtime. There is no charge for this event. If you are planning to attend, please call or email so we know how many to plan for.

What to bring:

  • A spinning wheel, if you have one.
  • A folding chair; a rug, if you would rather put your wheel on a rug than on a cement barn floor.
  • Lunch (unless you want to try the lamb stew) and something to drink. There is also a nice little pizza/pasta joint close by if you prefer.
  • Dress for the weather, and wear footwear that can get a little dirty.

The address of the farm is: 4190 W. Cook Road, Swartz Creek, MI 48473 — you can call (810-655-4091), email or or MapQuest for directions.

Here are some photos from the 2008 event, graciously provided by participant Diane Johnson.
